Playing the Long Game
2:40 PM - 3:10 PMRoom: Ballroom 2This session introduces game theory as a lens for understanding the digital payments ecosystem, grounded in James Carse’s distinction between finite and infinite games, later popularized by Simon Sinek. It explores how these concepts can be used to interpret competitive dynamics, network effects, collaboration across payments, and the evolving nature of fraud and financial crime, and whether success is better defined by short-term wins or sustained participation in an evolving system. The discussion will also examine how Black Swan events, from COVID-19 to the 2008 financial crisis, expose systemic fragility and accelerate transformation, while ongoing challenges such as fraud continue to test resilience and require continuous adaptation. Together, these perspectives offer insights into building adaptive payment systems designed to navigate uncertainty and evolve through disruption.
